I’ve photographed the University of Kentucky Art Department Iron Pour in the past, but I’ve never been able to stay for the finale until this year. After a day-long process of firing the furnace, melting scrap iron and pouring into cast molds prepared by artists and sculpture students, the final show began. Just as fireworks from Commonwealth Stadium celebrating UK’s victory over Alabama State bounced off the low clouds over Lexington, students and faculty created their own light display as they poured molten iron into wooden casts created by Louisville artist and UK alum Andrew Marsh.
The hot liquid metal reacted to the moisture in the wood and created a spectacular show of sparks and fire for the small crowd gathered in the parking lot behind the Reynolds Art Building. I used two cameras during the shoot, including one on the ground with a remote trigger.
