Six Kentucky Kernel photogs took a photo field trip Friday to Legends Boxing Gym on Versailles Road. You can always count on the gym as a great place for photography, but it can also pose some challenges when working with those quick boxers in pretty low light. It was fun for me, too, as I enjoyed shooting some myself.

While we were there, boxing champion and UK grad Darrin Van Horn stopped in for a visit and gave some in-the-ring pointers to Bo Biggers, a University of Kentucky student who is in his early career as a boxer.

Thomas Kinchen, aka Rocky, showed up for a workout with his sister Samantha. Rocky, who just won a title belt last weekend in his division, was the subject of the first video I made using the 5D Mark II in 2008. Also towards the end of the gallery you’ll notice a few iPhone Hipstamatic photos.

The true American Pickers – three generations of them in fact, had some long rows ahead of them early one morning this summer. Picking that many beans and then snapping them will give you some fine callouses – I can vouch for that.

Young Tory can hold her own picking beans with the best of them - including her mother and grandmother.

Bushels of beans turned into more than 60 quarts in a day or two. Come winter time, these beans will remind us of that sweltering morning in July.

Shaker Village and the Hipstamatic

I’ve written before about how keeping it simple kept things fun at Shaker Village using my iPhone4 and the Camera Bag App. This time, on a trip with some family and friends, I used the Hipstamatic app and enjoyed the results even more.

Never have I seen a collection of fish heads such as this one nailed to the side of a barn in Winchester. Yikes. It’s like the bass have a second life haunting me now.

I just can't even find words to describe how frightening these dead fish are. Shot with iPhone4 and Hipstamatic app.

The Hipstamatic Paks a wallop

I’ll admit I’m an app-jumper. Love this app, love that app. One fades while another inspires.

The latest iPhone app that has me fired up is the Hipstamatic. It’s been around a while but with the recent purchase of my new iPhone 4 and it’s bad @ss camera, the obsession has gone up a notch. [A PocketLint story tells of the development history of the popluar app]

Here’s what I really appreciate about this app besides the fantastic looks.

The app makes you wait for your image to “process”. I like this because it makes me slow down and think.
There is no option to filter images from your photo library. No cheating! That was one thing that irritated me about the Chase Jarvis Best Camera app.
Great interface that is really well designed.

Check out a sampling of some recent shots. Some are with the iPhone 3Gs and some are with the iPhone 4. After a month or two with the standard Hipsta Pak, I bought all of the in-app add-ons (you have the option of buying more “lenses” and “films” through the app).

Yellow Springs Break

The fam took a bit of a Spring Break trip to a small town in Ohio called Yellow Springs. Great small-town destination with great shops, food, bike trails and the Glen Helen Nature Preserve. Thought I’d post a few shots from the trip, including some iPhone photos and another iPhone panorama.

I had the good fortune of scoring some tickets for the Tennessee/Kentucky game Saturday night. I was hoping to witness a bit of history that night, but alas, UK couldn’t break UT’s 645-game winning streak. During a time out, though, when the folks in front of me had a moment to sit, I grabbed a few iPhone photos and stitched them together on the phone with the AutoStitch app.

Natural Bridge + iPhone + AutoStitch = Wow

That AutoStitch iPhone app never ceases to amaze me. I took a trip to Natural Bridge State Resort Park Sunday afternoon hoping to catch some of the fall color before it was too late (me and a few hundred other folks apparently had the same idea – I’ve never had to wait in line to get up the Sky Lift before). While under the arch, I thought I’d give the ol’ cell phone/panorama thing a try.

Thirty-two iPhone photos stitched together in AutoStitch in a matter of minutes produced the image above. It’s like magic to me.

The Simple Life

The fam took a short trip to Shaker Village at Pleasant Hill, Kentucky yesterday. It’s always a beautiful place, but the dark, gray day wasn’t particularly inspiring me to shoot. So, out pops the iPhone to play around a bit. I imagine I looked kinda odd with a 2700-dollar 5D Mark II hanging on my shoulder yet walking around shooting all my photos with my cell phone. Apply the Camera Bag app Magazine filter and voila – instant gratification.

At the end of our day, we took an hour-long ride on the Dixie Belle paddleboat – something I have never done before. The leaves were only just now starting to turn and the dark overcast skies weren’t helping the color much. I pulled out the 10D I had converted to infrared and shot a few frames as we floated down the river.

After the boat ride, we spotted a nice waterfall only a short walk from the parking lot. The photo below is from 23 iPhone photos and was stitched together in the phone with the AutoStitch app.
