Thousands of migrating purple martins fly over the skies of Hamburg Pavilion shopping center as they look for a place to roost in the trees in Lexington , Ky. Monday August 11, 2014. Over 10,000 purple martins, mixed in with about 5,000 European starlings, are staging at Hamburg as the sun sets as they prepare to leave for their winter migration to northern South America. The swallow family of birds are some of the first to migrate. These birds, which have attracted bird watchers from around the region, will likely only stay around for a week or two, according to John Brunjes, with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. These kinds of massive roosts occur in Kentucky every year, but they are normally in remote places and not visible to large human populations.
