Garrett Stephens, left, 10, and John Higgins, with the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation walked away from an elk calf after it was captured, tagged and radio collared by wildlife biologists with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife and volunteers on Laurel Fork reclaimed strip mine near Rowdy, Ky., on Saturday, 6/11/05. The research project, a joint program with the University of Kentucky and the Department of Fish and Wildlife, included the capture of 41 calves to document their size and weight and to outfit them with a radio transmitter collar. Blood samples were also taken to determine if they are carriers of the meningeal worm parasite. David Stephenson | Staff
