A barge with a volunteer crew and heavy equipment makes its way along Lake Cumberland heading to a boat ramp near Conley Bottom near Monticello, Ky., on Saturday, August 25, 2007, for a day spent cleaning up and chipping driftwood which has collected along the banks now highly visible this summer due to the low water levels. A volunteer effort, coordinated by the Army Corps of Engineers and area county solid waste divisions, spent the day at a handful of locations along the bank of Lake Cumberland to help reduce the amount of driftwood that has collected on the banks and is visible and accessible due to the water level drawdown this summer. The wood was either chipped on the spot, or collected in piles closer to the shoreline for removal or burning later. Multiple volunteer groups participated at multiple locations around the lake.
