November 21, 2009 - Fort Blackmore, Virginia, USA - A mother and child wave to Santa Claus as he rides away on the Santa Special after he stopped to pass out candy and gifts to waiting children, parents and their grandparents. This is the 67th year that the Santa Train has ridden through Appalachian towns in eastern Kentucky and western Virginia on its way to a parade culminating the annual event in Kingsport, Tennessee. The Santa Train was originally created as a means for the Kingsport and tri-state businesses to thank their customers who came in from out of town to shop. The Santa Train, also known as the Santa Special, travelled along a 110-mile route through Appalachia to hand out approximately 15 tons of toys and gifts to families along 14 stops.
