Charles Wellborn, pictured in his home in Georgetown, Ky., on Thursday, May 7, 2009, was docked on a troop ship Christmas Day in 1944 when he and his unit saw hungry children on the pier and instead of eating their desserts of fresh fruit, they offered it to the children, a gift that he says he still remembers to this day.
