  • February 2, 2012 - Cecilia, Kentucky, USA - Sandhill cranes feed in an old corn field as they gather at a roosting location along their winter migration route. According to counts made by biologists with the Kentucky Fish and Wildlife Resources, about 6,900 of the birds stopped in Cecilia on Tuesday night during their winter northward migration on their way to their nesting grounds in the Great Lakes Region. These birds, which are part of the Eastern population of sandhill cranes, are part of a group estimated to be larger than 70,000 birds, many of which were wintering in Florida. The migration in Kentucky is expected to be peaking at this time based on historical data gathered by wildlife biologists with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. For the first time in nearly a century, Kentucky just completed a hunting season on sandhill cranes. The season, which ran from Dec. 17, 2011, to Jan. 15, 2012, resulted in a harvest of 50 birds. The hunting season was scheduled to fall between the southward and northward migrations in order to maximize the viewing potential of the birds but still allow for hunting opportunity. • May 12, 2011 - Winchester, Kentucky, USA. A baby albino robin rested in the grass at the home of HUBERT SPARKS. "I'm 80 years-old and I've never seen anything like that," Sparks said. He and his wife discovered the baby Wednesday evening and have been feeding it worms after noticing that the bird's parents weren't feeding it. Albinism is a genetic mutation that prevents the production of melanin, or pigmentation, in the body, according to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. The bird's eyes appear pink because of the blood vessels behind the eyes. While many American Robins can show patches of white or diluted colors, a true albino, which is a total lack of pigmentation, is very rare, according to John Brunjes, Wildlife Biologist, Migratory Bird Program with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. • Avian biologist Kate Heyden, with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources, looks through a spotting scope to try and get a glimpse of a barn owl where it is nesting in the MedTech College building in the Coldstream Research Campus in Lexington, Ky, on 5/25/10. At right is Bill Bishop who is the court appointed receiver for the Lexhold property which MedTech College occupies and which has been placed under bankruptcy protection. Construction workers who were making finishes to the exterior of the building discovered the pair of owls and their four babies. Work has been halted until the babies fledge and after they leave the nest a permanent nesting box will be installed. According to Heyden, this nesting pair is one of less than a dozen known in the state currently. Photos by David Stephenson
