  • Richard "Mississippi" Anderson, 85, poured water from gallon jugs into the dirt where he was planting crimson sweet watermelons along Leestown Road near Great Acres Nursery in Lexington, Ky. on Tuesday, May 29, 2007. Anderson, who has 75 years of planting water melons, said that any moisture in the ground was far too deep to germinate the seeds, so he brought along 75 gallon jugs of water to water the hill where he was planting the seed. In a normal spring, he said he wouldn't have to bring the water. "Without this water, there is no way this seed would come up," he said. He is planting 3.5 acres of watermelons and 2,000 tomato plants nearby. Photo by David Stephenson | Staff 3239

  • September 3, 2009 - Lancaster, Kentucky, USA. ALVIN STAMPER, 26, prepared to defend his title as the tobacco cutting champion at the Garrard County Tobacco Cutting Competition. At the end of every summer during the tobacco harvest, men gather to compete against each other to see who is the fastest at cutting the crop before it is hung in the barns to cure. From planting to the auction house, tobacco remains one of the most labor intensive crops and the hands and backs of laborers have yet to be replaced by machines.
